Cosentino Winery was founded in 1980 as Crystal Valley Cellars/Cosentino Wine Company. Founder and Winemaker Mitch Cosentino started making wine in a rented room inside a wine warehouse owned by a Modesto, California wine distributor, and in late 1981 released his first wine.
From the beginning, Cosentino was known for his innovation, being one of the first California vintners to recognize Merlot as a stand-alone varietal. By the mid-eighties, the winery had focused on the super-premium segment of the wine market, earning a solid reputation for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay from Napa and Sonoma Counties.
In 1990, Mitch built a winery in Yountville right next door to the world famous Mustards Grill. In 1992, he took on partners, and Vintage Grapevine Inc. is now the majority owner, while Mitch retains some ownership and remains as the President and Winemaker. The 15,000-case production is mostly small case lots and a mix of exotic brand names, such as The Poet, The Novelist, The Sculptor, The Zin, and M. Coz.
