Wine Bargain: Chilean Cab

The Southern Hemisphere is becoming well known for real wine bargains — where low prices are combined with the kind of quality you’d pay more for elsewhere. And, nowhere is that more true than in the “Thin Country,” Chile. Once snubbed by wine aficionados for their indistinct vintages and lackluster vinification, Chilean wines have undergone a complete turnaround in quality in recent years and are now regarded as some of the best values on the market – giving California a run for its money in the process.

A Repeat Performance of a Star

Things are looking up for Southern Hemisphere Cabernet, too. This is particularly so with our “too-good-to-be-true” 2003 Viña Alamosa, Premium Cabernet Sauvignon from Cachapoal Valley, Chile.

We had numerous requests for the ‘01 vintage (which sold like it was free!). Yet, when it came to replenishing our supply, we skipped the ’02 vintage because we agreed with the winemaker that we’d only offer it when it was blindingly good.

The Pick of the Vineyard

The grapes for this wine were produced from vines that are 57 years old or older, for a rich concentration of flavors, and trellised vertically, for maximum exposure to the sun. The grapes were hand-picked and underwent malolactic fermentation, to soften the tannins. One of the hallmarks of a fine Cabernet Sauvignon is its affinity for oak, as you’ll discover when you experience the lovely toasty vanilla notes that were developed by then aging the wine in French oak barrels. We can’t deliver California Cabernet at this price. But, we can deliver Chilean Cabernet. So, make this your “go-to” wine with delicious steaks on the barbecue.
