Fruit From the Boot
With close to one million vineyards growing more than 1,000 grape varieties, Italy ships roughly one in every three bottles imported to the US! As if that’s not impressive enough, they produce roughly 3,200 wine “styles”.
There’s no need to sell us on the region. We’ve known for close to 25 years that the “fruit from the boot”, Tuscany in particular, makes for some of the most exciting and interesting wines in the world today - not the least of which is the “Super Tuscan”.
What Makes a Super Tuscan so Super?
Super Tuscans are a category of wine that grew out of the need for maverick Italian winemakers to experiment with the traditional Chianti recipe. When they began using “illegal” grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot back in the 1970’s and 80’s, who could have predicted the phenomenon they would inspire?
What resulted was an entire category of chic, impressive super rich, super concentrated red wines commanding enormous price tags with labels like Ornellaia, Tignanello and Sassicaia . These wines are generally big with ripe extracted fruit and evidence of some time in oak. But, how do they compare to Napa wines? Liken them to famous Cabernets like Caymus Special Select, Della Vale or Chateau Montelena and you’ll get a pretty good sense.
