An enduring mystery in the wine world is how the Syrah grape, a native of the Rhone Valley, came to be named Shiraz when it crossed the Equator.  Made from the same grape as the French Syrah, Shiraz is the supestar of Australia -- the signature red winegrape and a source of national pride.

Though it prefers a cooler climate.  Shiraz is a hardy variety, capable of cultivation even in poor soils.  At its best, it is capable of greatness -- rich, jammy and mouthfilling.  For aging, it combines the best of Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Like the first two, it can be drinkable immediately, and like the latter, it can easily mature in the bottle for 20 or more years.

With its onshore breezes and gravelly loam soils, the Geographe wine region sits just north of the more famous Margaret River, the premier wine region of Western Australia and one of the most prestigious regions on the continent.  This area is best known for the world's most popular varietals, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.  It is also, however, an excellent terroir for the noble winegrape, Shiraz.

Blessed with one of the best climates for viticulture in the world with the maritime influence of the Indian Ocean, the Geographe region is still in its youth compared to the centuries- old Old World wine regions of Europe, and it shows in its innovative and progressive approach to winemakeing.  This 100% Shiraz from the remarkable 2007 vintage demonstrates the price and quality available from Geographe, which remains relatively undiscovered.  However, it's fast developing into one of the country's most exciting wine areas.  So, stock up now, while the price is right!

This 100% Shiraz from the remarkable 2007 vintage in Western Australia demonstrates the price and quality available from this region. It shines a beautiful shade of dark red berry and offers bright fruit flavors of plums and blackcurrants with notes of black pepper and graphite. Matured for 14 months in large oak vessels, it’s a flavorful balanced red for your dinner table tonight.

This is one wine where the old food-pairing rule, red wine with red meat, can certainly apply.  All cuts of steak are a savory option, as are roast lamb and lamb shanks.  For a more casual entree thie wine is a fine match with kangaroo burger, but we recommend yor try it with a flame-broiled hamburger instead.

Silver -- 2010 World Wine Championships
"Dense inky violet black color. Aromas of blueberry compote and eucalyptus follow through on a round, supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-full body with great spicy depth and a rounded creme brulee note. Finishes with a long, juicy tangy fade. A delicious, zesty shiraz for sipping or the table"
