This wine has an intense crimson color, maintaining its hue throughout the glass. A multitude of fruit characteristics spring from the nose, with plum and cassis dominating, but with enhanced underlying herbaceous aromas. A subtle oak influence of coffee and vanillin adds extra layers to the nose. Rich and intense fruit flavors show some sweetness, with an acidic thread that carries the fruit across the palate. A creamy finish enhances the mouth feel, with luscious tannins defining the texture. All of the above merge together to provide a delightfully balanced wine.
When a wine of this quality comes around from a top vintage and with a good price, there is going to be a run on it.
Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
A continuation of unrelenting drought and limited winter rains threatened growing season water availability and cropping potential. The significant yield reductions observed across the Paringa Vineyards showed to have a positive influence on fruit quality. Aroma, flavor and tannin maturity was delayed by two to three weeks from a normal year as the region encountered a blistering week long heat wave just prior to the completion of verasion. This halted vine metabolism for almost a month before berry maturity finally reached its optimum potential. The grapes come from fifteen year old vines grown in a subsurface limestone layer beneath sandy loam topsoil.
On the nose, the wine explodes with crushed blackberries, crème de cassis, vanilla, oak references, black cherries, soft red plums, spice notes, licorice components and minerals.
On the palate, there are powerfully extracted crushed black berry fruits dominated by spicy black currants, wild cherries, brambleberries and sloe fruit, with good amounts of acidity. The midpalate is supple and quite delicious to discover, leading into a rounded finish with a soft tannin touch, revealing yet more cassis and currant notes.
