You don’t have to travel far on Napa Valley’s Highway 29 to find yourself at Oakville’s Nickel & Nickel Single Vineyard Winery. Although boasting an elegantly modern, solar-powered facility that produces up to 25 different single-vineyard wines, they are nestled within 42 acres of land originally settled as a farmstead in the 1880s. Their unique architecture allows for the co-existence of older buildings with the new winery. In fact, depending on which direction you’re looking in, you might wonder if you’ve gone back in time – or forward. Although after one sip of their Vogt Vineyard Searby Vineyard Chardonnay, you probably won’t care what year it is. Their wines are that impressive.
When was the last time you tried a wine with a point of view? Founded in 1997, Nickel & Nickel was born from a tradition of exceptional winemaking by the partners of Far Niente and is dedicated to creating wines that express the individual personality of each vineyard. "Great wine has to have a point of view," confirms director of winemaking and chairman Dirk Hampson. If you’re not yet familiar with Nickel & Nickel, we suggest treating yourself, family and friends to their 2009 Searby Vineyard Chardonnay, in which floral aromatics blend with Muscat flavors along with the essence of grapefruit and pear to deliver a particularly robust experience. What’s more, we think you’ll find this selection’s mineral notes are nicely subdued, while the natural lemon-lime acidity is sweetened by the oak’s vanillin.
