2003 was Merryvale's fifth harvest from the Beckstoffer family's Vineyard X, just southwest of Brix Restaurant on the Oakville bench. Blocks B and D were replanted to clones 4 and 337 in the late 90s. Block C is a ten acre block of thirty year-old vines. We are happy to be able to bottle a vineyard-designated wine from these grapes, and they are also an important component of Profile. The wine is opaquely purple, dense and powerful.
92 Points (Exceptional), Gold Medal, 2006 World Wine Championships:
"Deep garnet black color. Roasted pepper and dark chocolate aromas. A soft supple entry leads to a dryish medium-full body with tangy red and black berry fruit, cinnamon bark, and cocoa-dusted lemon and lime peels. Finishes with a tangy and tart berry, citrus, and toffee fade. A superb food style cab with great acidity and delineation." (10/25/2006)
92 Points, Wine Enthusiast:
"So rich, so opulent in primary fruit extract and new oak that it just demands time in the bottle to calm down. Explodes in cassis flavors spiced up with sweet, charry oak, and the tannins are fresh, young and vibrant, the kind that will usher this wine through a long lifetime. Best 2007–2012, or decant to let it breathe. S.H." (5/1/2007)
86 Points, Wine Spectator:
"Subtle herb and dried currant flavors have a dusty berry edge and an oak profile that offers cedar and a hint of anise. The best of two bottles tasted. Drink now through 2011. 1,357 cases made. –JL"
