The Tempranillo grape, the traditional backbone of the great Spanish Riojas, is often thought of as Spain's answer to Cabernet Sauvignon. As a young wine, Tempranillo can be more approachable than a Cabernet Sauvignon, yet still has the ability to age for years. Christine Andrew has created a home for the Tempranillo grape in Lodi, California with its classic Mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers amid rich fertile soil.
At first, your eye is intrigued by its deep dark purple color. Then the rich aroma of ripe blackberries mingled with black olives and violets takes over. This elegant wine's concentration and structure fills the palate with an intense medley of ripe fruit mixed with minerals and an underlying spice. Firm yet round tannins lead to a graceful yet complex finish with hints of oak and vanilla.
Tempranillo is a great partner for a standing rib roast or beef brochettes; garlic rubbed roasted leg of lamb and any type of wild game.
