As early as the 1960's, visionalry winemaker Robert Mondavi knew the potential inherent in Sauvignon Blanc. He helped raise awareness of it in the US when he marketed it as "Fume Blanc" (the identical wine) in the Napa Valley. Today, Sauvignon Blanc thrives under its own varietal name as a flavorful alternative to Chardonnay and continues to gain market share. Sourced from many locales around the world including New Zealand, South Africa and more recently, Chile, it is a versatile white that works well as a cocktail hour wine and lends itself to a wide variety of foods.
The 2009 Via Sutil Colchagua Estate Sauvigon Blanc is a suberb example of Chile's renewed focus on producing quality whites. Vina Sutil has strategically planted vineyards in possibly the most desirable acreage in Chile, Colchagua Valley because of its excellent conditions for upper quality wines, particularly Bordeaux varietals. This is one of the most prestigious and well-known wine regios in Chile accounting for the largest share of the edls won by Chilean wines. Named as the "Chilean Napa Valley" for the quality of its wine and its development of wine-tourism. the Cholchagua Valley was chosen "Wine Region of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast magazine.
Chile has gone from “bargain basement” to “bargains galore”. Still rebounding from a reputation for producing large quantities of wine of uneven quality, the country has made tremendous strides in the quality of its wines in recent years. New rootstock, irrigation systems and vinification techniques, as well as a new focus on matching the grape to its terroir (soil, slope and climate), has resulted in a tremendous turnaround for Chilean whites. It also means that white wines from Chile are tremendous bargains, over-delivering on quality for the price.
The grapes used in producing this wine hail from the Colchagua Valley, an area hardly known at all a decade ago—but which is fast becoming one of Chile’s most celebrated wine-growing regions. Located within the Central Valley, Chile’s prestige wine region, the Colchagua Valley is most hospitable to heat-loving varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc. Here, where the seasons are well defined and temperatures fluctuate widely between night and day, grapes enjoy an ideal microclimate that allows them to ripen slowly over the long summer.
Viña Sutil was founded in 1990 with the planting of nearly 600 acres of noble vines. The estate is dedicated to production of fine wines from excellent-quality grapes, and while the focus is on red wines, the vineyards do include small plantings of Sauvignon Blanc. This is a rare opportunity for you to experience a limited-quantity white from this esteemed estate.
Tasting Notes
Noticeably less acidic than New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, this Chilean shines a yellow gold color with hints of green. An expressive nose of citrus and tropical fruit leads you to a palate replete with herbs, grapefruit and ripe pineapple, along with notes of fresh grass. Well-balanced and lively in the mouth, it has a good acidity and a long finish.
Serving Suggestion
This wine is an excellent partner for appetizers—perhaps crudités with artichoke dip or a cheese platter. (Don’t forget the goat cheese.) Carry it forward into the main course, and you’ll find it pairs beautifully with fish dishes, Thai cuisine, sushi, poultry and so much more.
