Argentine wines have been enjoying their fair share of the spotlight over the last decade. Certainly, the strong US dollar, which began this surge, has worked to Argentina’s benefit. However, it will be high-caliber, worthy producers that will sustain the interest in this region.

Argentina’s rise is as much about quality as it is about price. And the game isn’t over yet. With the 2008 Cahuin, Maipu Winemaker's Select Red (pronounced “cah-HWEEN, my-POOH”), we’ve delivered on another absolute steal for a wine of its quality from Argentina.

If you're a foodie and you've fallen for Malbec like so many Americans, prepare your taste buds for this unique, versatile 90-point blend. This release combines the food friendliness of Sangiovese (40%) with equal parts of trendy Tempranillo and Malbec, for a wine that reflects all the rustic flavors you’ve come to admire about Malbec (blackberry, plum, and an earthy, wood-like appeal) with the accessibility of two lighter reds.

Field blends like this work because they strengthen the overall quality of the wine and allow each varietal to complement the characteristics others. In this "Winemaker's Select", these three varietals combine for a wine that is bigger than the sum of its parts.

Wine Profile

Tasting Notes Argentine reds are exploding in the marketplace, and this unique blend of three varietals is just one example demonstrating why. Sangiovese adds lovely red fruit. Tempranillo lends earthy, rich notes of cherry and strawberry with a hint of spice. Malbec, the backbone of the Argentine wine industry, gives the wine its depth of fruit and body.
Awards Bronze, 2010 San Francisco International Wine Competition (7/6/2010). The San Francisco International Wine Competition is the largest, most influential international wine competition in America. Judged by a panel of nationally recognized wine experts, it remains the nation’s most respected wine competition.
Vineyard Notes As one of the hottest places to go to for Argentine wines, Mendoza (and its sub-region, Maipú) is clearly not at a loss for high-caliber producers! Throngs of wine lovers trek to its high-altitude vineyards. It’s no wonder the area was voted “Wine Region of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast magazine.
Production Notes Sangiovese (40%), Tempranillo (40%), Malbec (20%)
Food Pairing Notes As one of the world’s largest beef producers, Argentina crafts wines that are intended to be consumed with red meat. Give this wine a go with grilled red meat, a staple of the Argentine diet. It will stand up to any number of spice rubs. The addition of Sangiovese makes it a great match with tomato-based dishes. And, you can serve it with your bigger cheeses like Bleu and Camembert.
