Mi Sueno Winery
An Immigrant's Story
The American wine industry, like so many others, is largely the tale of folks exporting their homegrown talents to another land in search of a better locale in which to practice their craft; perhaps a chance to be better rewarded for their efforts and talents. Germans, Italians, Hungarians and French descended upon this country throughout the 19th century bringing with them winemaking and grapegrowing knowledge first honed in the Old World.
Today, the American wine industry is mature to the point that it exports talented folks to other countries where American-grown winemaking skills are applied to other lands. Yet the “immigrants’ story” is alive and well in America in the form of those who come to this country and discover winemaking to be their vocation and who go on to make remarkable contributions. Mi Sueno, the product of Rolando Herrera’s commitment to wine, is just such story.

Herrera first came to Napa Valley with his parents from their home in the Mexican state of Michoacan. The family would return home five years later. Rolando however would return to the United States and begin a journey that led him to the top of the winemaking field.
Herrera began as a dishwasher at Auberge du Soleil in Napa. From there he moved to Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars where he worked as a laborer then as a harvest worker. Having been taken with the winemaking craft, Roland spent the next twenty years diving deep into wine with work at Stag’s Leap where he would become cellarmaster, then assistant winemaker at Chateau Potelle, then Winemaker at Vine Cliff Winery and finally Director of Winemaking at Paul Hobbs Consulting. Today, Mi Sueno is all Rolando. The immigrant’s dream of making wine for himself has become the dream of wine lovers looking for outstanding bottlings.
The focus at Mi Sueno is Napa Valley. Its intense Cabernets, Syrah and red blends reflect a style of winemaking that emphasizes deep color, rich palate, presence and intensity of flavors.
Probably as a result of his time with Paul Hobbs, Rolando has showed a willingness also to search out great vineyards from regions beyond his Napa home base. His Chardonnays from Sonoma and Carneros as well as his Pinot Noir from the famed Russian River Valley is a testament to this broadness of vision he brings to his winemaking.
Mi Sueno is an example of an evolution in California winemaking that should have been expected. More and more Mexican immigrants who got their start in the vineyards have pursued their own winemaking careers. A number of wineries are now headed up by Latino immigrants while Latino winemakers are on the increase in California. Mi Sueno is a role model not just for Mexican brethren seeking to turn their experience into a career in winemaking, but for winemakers of all backgrounds who simply want to make the best wines possible.
