Flora Springs Winery
The Ghosts Are Gone
Every now and then you hear about the “Ghost Wineries” of California. They do exist here and there. They are the remnants of California’s early foray into winemaking. Most of them remain abandoned if only because the effort to regenerate them into something new and useful means tremendous amounts of work and money.
But there exists some courageous people who have taken on the challenge. The Komes Family of Napa Valley, long known by wine drinkers as the proprietors of Flora Springs Winery & Vineyards, turned one of these Ghost wineries into the home for some of the Valley’s finest Cabs.

Originally built in the 1880s, the buildings that now house Flora Springs Winery on the western edge of the Valley consisted of two run down stone shells of its former self when Jerry Komes found the property in 1978. But, it had potential and sat on good ground for planting.
The old ghost winery that Komes bought and named after his wife, Flora, was built by a local stonemason named Cadioli and was the home to Brockhoff Winery before the turn of the 20th century. But, between the outbreak of Phylloxera in the late 19th century and the onset of Prohibition in 1919, the stone buildings were left abandoned. However, a soon-to-be Napa Valley icon saw their potential.
In the early 1930s, in anticipation of the repeal of Prohibition, Louis M. Martini bought the buildings, renamed them “Villa del Rey” and began to store wine in them. When repeal came, Martini was geared up and ready to go. The two buildings were used by Martini to age his sherry. As the Martini brand grew, the property was again abandoned, until Komes took on the task of rehabilitating what had once been a fine stone winery, then abandoned, and properly classified as a “ghost.”
The resurrection of the beautiful stone buildings formed the base for Flora Springs Winery and
remains today the centerpiece of a property that has expanded to included numerous vineyards across the Napa Valley and a winery known as a source of magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon.
The winery is open to visitors only by appointment. It’s most certainly worth the effort to call Flora Springs, make the trek down Zinfandel Lane and experience the historic buildings first hand. In addition to a tour of the former ghost and a walk into Flora Springs’ hillside caves, visitors to the winery will have the chance to taste a selection of Cabernets that are made from a small selection of the finest grapes culled from the winery’s nearly 500 acres of vineyards. It’s a true Napa Valley experience.
