Clos Pegase was founded in 1985 by Jan Schrem, who became fascinated by winemaking after a successful publishing career in Japan. With the help of the Dean of American winemakers, André Tchelistcheff, Schrem created a unique wine estate which combines his love of art, architecture and wine.
It is located on 50 acres in Calistoga with another 400 acres of vineyards in Carneros. In the midst of the Calistoga property is a knoll with the Schrem home at the top, the winery at the bottom, and 20,000 square feet of wine aging caves in between. The extensive art collection and the spectacular structures in and around the winery have acquired international acclaim.
The press has described the winery as "a place of pilgrimage." Appropriately, Schrem says about the wine produced at his exotic winery, "We have achieved balance, harmony, and symmetry in the classical Greek sense, avoiding the baroque concepts of the high oak, high alcohol, and high extract. The results are wines of quiet style and elegance, and this has become known as the Clos Pegase style."
