Schramsberg
Jacob Schram was born in 1826 in the small town of Pfeddersheim Germany, along the Rhine River. He came from a winemaking family, but when he was 16, he immigrated to New York and was educated in the trade of barbering. In 1852, he moved west and eventually landed in the Napa Valley.
In 1862, Jacob purchased a large piece of land on the mountainsides of the Napa Valley, and Schramsberg was born. In the beginning, Jacob continued barbering to supplement his income. The winery and vineyards continued to grow until they had fifty acres of bearing vines and were producing upwards of 12,000 cases per year. His wines were winning awards at American and international competitions.

Jacob continued running the business with his son Herman until the spring of 1905, when he took ill. He quickly worsened and died. The St. Helena Star wrote that, "His funeral was largely attended and extended the length of Spring Street, and his body was laid to rest beside his wife Annie in the marble city." Although Herman attempted to continue the business, phylloxera and Prohibition brought an end to the Schram era.
Herman sold the property, and it would change ownership several times over the next 50 years until Jack and Jamie Davies purchased it in 1965. And thus, Schramsberg entered the modern era.

"The 2004 J Schram has aromas of fresh green apple, appricot and lime and a bit of minerality. In addition there is a creaminess of vanilla custard, and marzipan follwed by fresh baguette. Flavors of orange, melon and lemon are present with some lime pith. The fruit is accentuated by warm spices, cinnamon and nutmeg. The texture is rich and tangy with an acidity that is long and balanced"

"Fruitful aromas of fresh lime and Granny Smith apple, accentuated by nuances of juicy pineapple and lemon grass, are complimented by notes of honeycomb and hazelnut from the years of aging en tirage. On the palate, the 2008 Blanc de Blancs enters crisp and tangy, unfolding with flavors of lime, pineapple and exotic tropical fruits. Delicious and layered flavors of lemon custard and fresh-from-the-oven brioche follows. The palate finishes with a delicate sweetness and a generous acidity that is long and quenching.” – Winemakers Keith Hock and Hugh Davies
